In our YouTube series «A Different Kind of Marvel», moderator Sebastian looks back at the first Marvel films, which were made long before the MCU and even before «X-Men» (2000) and «Spider-Man» (2002). After the series reached a temporary low point last week with » Captain America » from 1979, the direct sequel is on the program today: » Captain America 2: Death Too Soon » (also from the year 1979).
«Captain America: Death Too Soon» isn’t a masterpiece either, but it still offers a little more action than the deadly boring first part and above all shows Captain America a little more as a superhero with supernatural powers.
The plot of «Captain America 2»
The plot revolves around a mysterious terrorist named General Miguel ( Christopher Lee ) who kidnaps a scientist and forces him to create a compound that accelerates aging rapidly. He then unleashes this on the population of a small town and blackmails the US government with an attack on the city of Portland.
Luckily, dr. Simon Mills (played again by Len Birman ) becomes a friend of the kidnapped scientist and puts Captain America (played again by Reb Brown ) on the case…
Wasted potential
The new director Ivan Nagy (replacement for Rod Holcomb in part 1) doesn’t present an incredibly imaginative story here, but the potential for at least a mediocre superhero movie would have been there.
Unfortunately, «Captain America II: Death Too Soon» suffers from the villain character, although this is played by the unquestionably biggest and greatest actor in the cast: Christopher Lee , who is known for his roles in various Hammer horror films (such as » Dracula » from 1958). and has been world famous since his roles as Saruman in «The Lord of the Rings» and Count Dooku in «Star Wars».

Lee hardly comes into his own in Captain America 2, which is a real waste given his talent for villain roles. In his video, Sebastian comes to the conclusion that the British character actor should have been given much more time.
Unfortunately, this won’t be the last time that the villain in a Marvel film is given away like this — even in the MCU, apart from Thanos and Loki, there are a lot of pale and boring villains.
