» Final Account » is a British-American documentary film. Over a period of more than a decade, exclusive talks were held for him with surviving contemporary witnesses of the Nazi dictatorship in Germany and Austria. Representatives of the last generation of that time provide information on issues that are still relevant today, such as authority, conformity, national identity, complicity, perpetration and responsibility.
Both men and women, former members of the SS, Hitler Youth and Bund Deutscher Mädel, as well as civilians who at first glance seemed uninvolved, were interviewed. Even the trailer suggests that these interviews must have been conducted very emotionally. The film is apparently intended to show how different perceptions, memories and personal assessments of one and the same thing can be. This seems to become particularly clear with regard to the role of today’s elderly in the Holocaust and the maintenance of the power apparatus of the Third Reich.

The man behind «Final Account»
Final Account is the final directorial work of documentary filmmaker, photographer and human rights activist Luke Holland (“I was Hitler’s slave”). It was not until he was a teenager that the Briton found out that his Jewish mother had fled from Vienna to England shortly before the annexation to the German Reich and that large parts of her family had been murdered in concentration camps. Holland, who grew up in England and Paraguay, was fluent in German and received his degree in German Studies from the University of Manchester.
In 2010 he realized that this was probably the last chance to collect authentic voices from contemporary witnesses who had grown up under the swastika. He conducted over 300 individual interviews and didn’t stop when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2015. Just a few weeks after his film was finally completed, Luke Holland passed away in June 2020 at the age of 71.
