I watched Malignant at the Alhambra cinema in Berlin-Wedding, where audiences are not known for being particularly quiet. If there’s chattering during the film presentation, it’s extremely annoying and I was correspondingly annoyed in the quieter, creepy passages of «Malignant», which can be assigned to the hauted house genre. But putting up with the audience through those passages was totally worth it. Because when the crazy twist finally happened, which I won’t reveal here, there were loud, justified cheers — and you rarely hear that among the traditionally rather reserved German cinema audience.

The twist splits, the film is awesome
Such an unusual twist does not meet with the approval of all viewers and that is completely fine. Director James Wan, who pushed «Malignant» as a heart project between the blockbuster productions of » Aquaman » and » Aquaman 2 «, just does his own thing here, instead of playing it safe. In the FILMSTARTS review, there were 4.5 stars for this «visually outstanding and also ridiculously entertaining horror slasher, which is primarily aimed at fans and connoisseurs of the genre.
The review of «Malignant»
That’s what it’s about: Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is traumatized by an event in her past and today has repeated visions of horrific murders that actually happened in exactly the same way. She is one of the suspects, although she actually has no motive. Do the crimes have anything to do with Madison’s imaginary childhood friend, Gabriel?
