Daryl ( Norman Reedus ) has come a long way in The Walking Dead , considering the character didn’t appear at all in the comic book adaptation of the hit series. Already in Season 9, after Rick Grimes ( Andrew Lincoln ) left, he took his place at the top of the cast. And as FILMSTARTS video producer and «Walking Dead» expert Sebastian explains to you in his video above, Season 11 could see Daryl take over a very important Rick storyline from the comics: helping to shape the resistance to the leadership of the Commonwealth.
Crucial clues to this can be found in the recently released twelfth episode of the season, in which Daryl and Commonwealth military leader Mercer ( Michael James Shaw ) gradually warm to one another. It is already clear that Mercer, despite his position in the huge community, is not entirely happy with the conditions there. These doubts could now be reinforced by the fact that, thanks to Daryl and his comrades-in-arms, he sees that surviving in the zombie apocalypse can be done differently, namely without the injustices of a two-class society.
Mercer & Daryl vs Pamela?
So it is slowly becoming clear that sooner or later Mercer could also rebel against Commonwealth Governor Pamela Milton ( Laila Robins ) in the series. While he was actively supported by Rick in the comics, this part may now fall to Daryl in the series. The outlook in the ninth episode of the season suggests that Daryl will be loyal to the Commonwealth and even oppose Maggie ( Lauren Cohan ), who wants nothing to do with the huge community. But maybe not everything is as it first seems. When saying goodbye to Maggie in the current episode, Daryl at least seemed to understand his girlfriend’s decision.
Despite everything, it is rather questionable that the replacement Rick Daryl will end up suffering a similar fatal fate as comic Rick, after all we already know that the fan favorite will have his own spin-off with Carol ( Melissa McBride ) will get.
And what about Lance?
What remains exciting is what role the Commonwealth No. 2 Lance Hornsby ( Josh Hamilton ) will play in the whole thing. He too is already sawing off Pamela’s throne with his plans for Alexandria and Co. as well as his mysterious secret organization, but he probably has his own motivation for doing so. While Mercer and Co. will probably be after equality, Lance is apparently simply striving for more power. So it remains to be seen whether the various resistance movements will ultimately come together or whether Pamela will face opposition from different quarters.
