The most successful cinema films of the year have been determined, as have the Oscar winners — so the film year 2021 can be shelved… However, a review of the year is still missing: the hit list of the best-selling films in German home cinema. The film promotion agency commissioned GfK to evaluate the German home cinema year – including creating a top 10 list. According to this study, 2021 was, all in all, a successful home cinema year, with total sales of 2.90 billion euros, the home cinema market grew by an impressive twelve percent compared to 2020.
In contrast to the streaming business, however, sales of DVDs and Blu-rays declined: in 2020, sales of 203 million euros were generated from the sale of Blu-rays and 310 million euros from the sale of DVDs. In 2021 it was only 160 million euros with Blu-rays and 239 million euros with DVDs. Regardless of that: DVDs and Blu-rays are still a big business — and according to the GfK/FFA study, the following ten films were the most popular of the previous year…
10th place: «Dune»
Of all the cinema films released in 2021, » Dune » is the fourth most successful in Germany with 1.84 million tickets sold. In the home cinema, Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction epic was not quite as successful — but still enjoyable.

With 86,986 copies sold, the first part of the new “Dune” saga, which won six Academy Awards, secured tenth place in the German DVD/Blu-ray hit list. The sci-fi epic has appeared in several limited steel book editions, but is now also available as a streaming subscription on Sky Ticket.
9th place: «Zack Snyder’s Justice League»
At first, “ Zack Snyder’s Justice League ” was only available via Sky in Germany – the DC superhero epic, which lasts around four hours, has now been streamed over to Netflix. However, the 92,106 Snyder fans who bought the film on disc don’t care about the streaming rights — they can watch the mammoth project at any time according to their own taste.

What is good to know, by the way: The same applies to the film, which as a Snyder cut has almost gained the status of a dark legend over the years, as to all the other films on this list that have appeared in different editions: for the evaluation all physical media were added together, whether DVD or 4K Blu-ray, standard edition or collector’s edition.
8th place: «Wonder Woman 1984»
It was a very close race, but in the end Wonder Woman prevailed in the DC duel: Patty Jenkin’s «Wonder Woman» sequel » Wonder Woman 1984 » in bright 80s colors went over the counter 92,262 times in Germany.

Incidentally, the «Wonder Woman» corner of the DC film universe will be further expanded in the future: in addition to a third part, which Jenkins will once again direct, an offshoot about Themyscira’s Amazons is also planned.
7th place: «After Truth»
A brief respite from special effects, action-packed spectacles and sometimes literally larger-than-life characters: seventh place in the best-selling home cinema titles of 2021 goes to the erotic young-adult romance “ After Truth ”, which is particularly popular in Germany. 93,473 copies have been sold — and the next part of the saga is already in the starting blocks.

Once in home cinema, namely with the sequel «After Love», which ran on the big screen in 2021 and was released on DVD and Blu-ray this year. The next part of the series is expected to start in cinemas on August 25, 2022 under the title “ After Forever ”.
