Four and a half years after ” Bright ” was released by Netflix and became the most successful film in the history of the streaming service at the time, it is clear that the sequel “Bright 2” will no longer come. This is reported by Hollywood insider and Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw on Twitter . Netflix has dropped all plans to do the sequel.
“Bright 2” cancellation: No episode of the Oscar slap
That doesn’t stop Will Smith from getting angry. In the case of “Bright 2″ it should have nothing to do with his slap against colleague Chris Rock at the Oscars. While Netflix is putting off the action film ” Fast & Loose ” by “John Wick” director David Leitch for the time being, according to Shaw there are other reasons for the complete cancellation of “Bright 2”.
He doesn’t say which ones, but given the long history of delays in the sequel, it’s relatively obvious that the streaming service has simply lost interest in the very expensive project. Instead, the “Bright” universe will probably be used for smaller films like the spin-off “ Bright: Samurai Soul ”, which was released last fall.
Postponed because of a slap in the face: No 3rd natural series for now
According to an article in Bloomberg , a direct consequence of the Oscar slap is a decision by Disney subsidiary National Geographic to postpone further collaboration with Smith for the time being. After the series “ One Strange Rock ” and “ Welcome To Earth ” available on Disney+, Smith should soon realize a third series with NatGeo with “ Pole To Pole ”.
» “One Strange Rock” on Disney+ *
» “Welcome To Earth” on Disney+ *
In Pole To Pole, Will Smith will be joined on trips to both the South and North Poles. The plan was said to start filming the series in May 2022. According to a Bloomberg source, the decision has now been made not to start production until the fall. This postpones the release, which should also take place on Disney + in this country, and there is more distance between the start and the Oscar incident.
What will become of “Emancipation”?
That’s going to be the general idea for everyone behind Will Smith projects: to give time to let the grass grow over Smith’s assault on Chris Rock. That’s why, for example, further work on ” Bad Boys 4 ” was postponed for the time being. It is eagerly awaited how AppleTV+ will deal with the only Will Smith project that has already been filmed: The slavery action thriller drama ” Emancipation ” should hit theaters and the streaming service in autumn or winter 2022.
Apple spent a lot of money on the project and outbid numerous Hollywood studios in a bidding war. Because “Emancipation” was considered a great prestige project – and a possible further Oscar role for Smith. Will it become something with a start in 2022 and thus in the year of the slap in the face? As is well known, Will Smith has been banned from the Oscar Academy for ten years (having previously left it himself). This means that he can no longer attend Academy events (especially the Oscars) and vote at them. However, he can still be nominated for further Oscars during this time (just not allowed to receive them personally). But it is questionable
It seems difficult to leave the finished film lying around for a longer period of time. After all, expenses want to be refinanced again and in the tough battle of streaming services, one cannot afford to hold back exclusive and extraordinary content for too long.
