Last Monday, March 28, 2022, the 18th season of “ Grey’s Anatomy ” started on ProSieben. The hospital series was once one of the most popular content on the TV station and for years it was able to show strong market shares in the double-digit range within its target group of 14 to 49 year olds. But those times are now over. Season 17 already posted disappointing numbers on TV. ProSieben reacted and changed the traditional slot. Grey’s Anatomy now airs Mondays instead of Wednesdays. But even that couldn’t save the season opener.
As Meedia reports, “Grey’s Anatomy” only attracted 800,000 viewers on Monday , giving it a market share of 2.9 percent overall and 5.7 percent in the target group. For comparison: The first-placed “Spreewald crime” on ZDF was seen by almost 6.5 million people and thus more than eight times more often. “Grey’s Anatomy” didn’t even make it into the top 25. Within the relevant target group, the “Tagesschau” received the most attention. 1.3 million 14- to 49-year-olds tuned in to the news show, with “Grey’s” there were just under 400,000, which was only enough for 20th place.
One reason for the weakening ratings could be that “Grey’s Anatomy” is a veteran that has been running for a long time and maybe that’s why it’s slowly losing interest. What definitely hurts the ratings of the doctor series is the start of streaming: the new episodes “Grey’s Anatomy” have been on Disney+ since season 17, a week before the TV premiere and (even since season 16) also on Joyn.

Grey’s Anatomy is a hit on Disney+
So fans of the series no longer have to wait for the TV broadcast, but can always call up the latest episodes a week in advance. This also applies to season 18, because the latest episodes at Disney + and Joyn are now also running on Mondays. So nothing has changed in the seven-day lead. The streaming data proves that this possibility is used diligently.
While Disney+ doesn’t provide specific numbers, Meedia said Grey’s Anatomy was the most-watched content on Disney+ last Monday , ahead of the new installment of the hit zombie series The Walking Dead and the new Ice Age movie .
It cannot be said with certainty whether Disney+ is the only reason why there has been such a hitch on ProSieben for “Grey’s Anatomy” lately. What is certain, however, is that many viewers are turning to the streaming alternative and only very few of them will also tune in to ProSieben afterwards.
