1945 is the year that World War II ended. In the Harry Potter universe, this year is also associated with another major event: the final duel between the once lovers Dumbledore and Grindelwald, from which the black magician emerged as the loser. He was imprisoned, the Wizards’ War, which coincided with the Muggle War, ended, and the original plan was for Fantastic Beasts 5 to end with it.
However, not even » Fantastic Beasts 4 » has a start date yet. » Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets » should decide the fate of this film series.
There is no question that the enthusiasm for the «Harry Potter» books and films has not yet spilled over into the prequel films, «Fantastic Animal Beings 2», although a cinema hit in Germany, even made less money worldwide than any other film the entire Potter franchise before. The trade press and many Internet users regard it as the worst film in the series and thus also weigh on «Fantastic Beasts 3».
Things aren’t looking good for Fantastic Beasts 3, and therefore neither for Fantastic Beasts 4.
When a film series is as visibly battered as the Post-Part 2 «Beasts» franchise, recovery is going to be tough. Part 1 grossed 814 million US dollars worldwide, part 2 only 654 million. This is anything but a miserable value, but far from what Studio Warner had hoped for, especially since a total of five films were planned and many of the viewers of the second part should now be fed up with the series.
The previous forecasts for «Fantastic Animal Beings 3» are generally cautious: the film — according to the first trends from Friday — is likely to have a very successful first weekend in Germany with between 700,000 and 800,000 visitors. But a success in Germany alone is not enough and it would be a weaker start than the other parts. A similar picture is also emerging in the rest of the world:
For the first three days after the US start on April 15, US revenues of between 40 and 55 million US dollars were forecast , which would be less than the 62 million that the “Grindelwalds Crime» in the most important market for the franchise — and that was already a low point.
The forecast US total revenue in the range of 100-140 million US dollars should not cause any jubilation at Warner either («Grindelwald’s crime» fetched 159 million, again a low point). The important cinema market in China, which is currently being affected again by the cinema closures caused by Corona, is also a cause for concern. Fantastic Beasts 3 launched here on April 8th.
And then what about the rest of the story?
There’s a real possibility that the Beasts series will end prematurely with Secrets of Dumbledore , suffering a similar fate to many other young-adult franchises (think The Destiny), except that the Beasts ‘ are not based on a whole series of books, but on a thin, fictional textbook.
JK Rowling apparently thought up most of the story especially for the cinema and it would not surprise us if she and co-screenwriter Steve Kloves were instructed by Studio Warner to conceive «Fantastic Beasts 3» as a precautionary measure .
Fantastic Beasts 3 ending explained: is this a joke?
In any case, it is striking that several important plot threads are spun to an extremely abrupt end here. While that seems pretty awkward, fans would at least have some form of closure, while film series like «The Destiny» were left completely unfinished, as if a bridge construction had been broken off in the middle.
Will the beasts continue and if so, how? FILMSTARTS YouTuber Sebastian also thought about this and shot a video:
