This Sunday at 8:15 p.m., “ X-Men: Dark Phoenix ” will be shown on ProSieben , and to get straight to the point: Yes, there are worse Marvel adaptations than this one. Josh Trank’s incredibly lousy 2015 film adaptation of the Fantastic Four , which rightfully tops our list of the worst Marvel movies of all time , is the first thing that comes to mind. But at least one can still have some amusement about such an unsuccessful total catastrophe. “Dark Phoenix”, on the other hand, is so mediocre that it hardly evokes any emotional reactions. If you still want to see the film and missed the TV broadcast, it’s also available on Disney+ :

What potential is wasted here, be it the grandiose actors or the legendary comic template, is just a shame. And it’s a huge disappointment, especially as the finale of the X-Men series from 20th Century Fox, perhaps the most exciting superhero universe next to the MCU. Even the term finale feels wrong in this context. “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” seems completely randomly slapped into the overarching narrative.
The already confusing mutant universe finally looks like a frayed ball of wool, in which the various narrative threads sometimes chaotically intertwine, sometimes seem to diverge, without offering a stringent common thread and thus a stimulating dramaturgy as a whole, as the MCU does, for example succeeded with the Infinity Saga.
This is what X-Men: Dark Phoenix is about
Ten years after the events of ” X-Men Apocalypse “, the mutants around Charles Xavier ( James McAvoy ) are finally accepted by the US government. In return, Xavier sends his pupils on risky missions to save people in need. One day , Mystique ( Jennifer Lawrence ), Beast ( Nicholas Hoult ), Jean Gray ( Sophie Turner ) and Co. are sent into space on an astronaut rescue mission. However, Jean is hit by a solar flare that grants her incredible power.
Shapeshifter Lilindra ( Jessica Chastain ) then enters the scene and manipulates the emotionally fragile teenager in order to bring her power under her control. As a result, Jean turns against her friends and humanity. The X-Men must now work together to stop the Dark Phoenix, and they also need the help of Charles’ nemesis Magneto ( Michael Fassbender ).
