That’s what «Ronin» is about
It’s a unique team of professionals: Weapons and strategy specialist Sam ( Robert De Niro ), excellent getaway driver Larry ( Skipp Sudduth ), weapons expert Spence ( Sean Bean ), German computer specialist Gregor ( Stellan Skarsgard ) and the French organizational genius Vincent ( Jean Reno ). They have all been hired by the mysterious Dierdre ( Natascha McElhone ) to undertake a highly risky assignment.
You are to obtain an aluminum suitcase, the contents of which are not known to any member of the crime crew. A Russian organization, the IRA and other threatening groups are also after the suitcase. They are all aware that this assignment is life-threatening. Time is running mercilessly against the team — and a traitor in their own ranks complicates the situation even more…
A grandiose homage to French cinema
+++ Opinion +++
As early as the 1990s, «Ronin» seemed like a kind of contrast program within action cinema. While blockbusters like “The Rock”, “Die Hard”, “Terminator 2” and “Con Air” rely on thoroughbred spectacle, John Frankenheimer is more concerned with developing a feeling for the characters and their realities. The model for “Ronin” was more than clearly the so-called polar cinema from France, which Jean-Pierre Melville (“Four in the Red Circle”) once put his icy stamp on.
Here, viewers are drawn into a cold world where violence and corruption have prevailed. The characters you deal with have forgotten how to live. Instead, they just work. It’s no different in Ronin. Sam and his companions are barely able to move freely through the streets because they have to plan their every step to the last detail. When these people enter a bar, the back door is first cleared in order to be able to disappear as quickly and unharmed as possible.
At the end of the 1990s, it was already unusual and unusual to see the thoughtfulness with which John Frankenheimer operated in “Ronin”. He gives the characters time and space to develop, talks about their fears, their profile neuroses and their completely extraordinary abilities — and still allows them secrets. “Ronin” can thus be seen almost as a kind of romantic return to traditional genre cinema , which was not just about riots, but also about the people themselves.
However, when «Ronin» explodes, John Frankenheimer brings out the really big guns. Filmed on location from Nice to Ares, Ronin boasts some of the best car chase scenes of the 1990s. The authenticity of the precise staging literally pushes the audience into their seats when they step on the gas. In any case, there has seldom been a more stylish and intense ride down the streets of France – especially when it comes to American productions.
