On April 20, 2022, the second season of the Russian time travel dramedy “ Matryoshka ” starts. This is the end of a three-year wait. Finally, Season 1 was released on Netflix on February 1st, 2019 . Back then, the surprise hit was showered with praise: The reviews were overwhelmingly positive (97 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes ), there were four Emmy nominations and our colleagues at Moviepilot even voted it one of the top 100 best series of the 2010s .
Now there’s finally a long trailer for Matryoshka Season 2, which you can watch above.
That’s what “Matryoshka” is about
In Season 1, “Matryoshka” was a variation on the “groundhog day” core idea. New York native Nadia (“Orange Is The New Black” star Natasha Lyonne ) landed in a time warp, reliving her 36th birthday over and over again.
Especially nasty: At the end of her parties, she died in a different bizarre, but still painful way. The universe seemed to want to get one over on Nadia and the cynical chain smoker had to find a way out of this ordeal…
This change brings Season 2
Season 2 will no longer be based on a time loop mechanic, after all Nadia successfully escaped from it at the end of the previous season together with Alan ( Charlie Barnett ), who was also imprisoned. But the trailer already announces a new nasty prank of the universe that is even worse than death.
The trailer doesn’t reveal exactly what that means, but it probably has to do with the fact that Nadia now travels through time in a different way. At least she ends up in the material shown in the 80s…
