When “ Moonlight ” won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017 , there was a great outcry. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had previously opened the wrong envelope on stage and foolishly announced “ La La Land ” as the big winner of the most important film award. The entire team of the musical hit even received the award when the mix-up was suddenly announced. It was an unbelievable moment, especially since the 14-times (!) nominated «La La Land» started the race as the big favorite anyway.

Of course, all the excitement surrounding the Oscar mix-up made huge headlines, so nearly every movie fan heard of «Moonlight» back then. In German cinemas, however, it was only enough for 450,000 tickets and thus number 67 in the annual charts. That’s a good result for an indie film that cost just five million dollars, but in view of the enormous media attention in the run-up to the German theatrical release, it’s still a bit small.
Today, March 16, 2022, «Moonlight» will be shown at 8:15 p.m. on the TV channel Arte — without any commercial breaks. The drama is also currently available on Netflix . If you’re one of those people who missed the movie back then, then you should take one of these two chances. In our opinion, «Moonlight» is a brilliantly staged highlight that presents its «painful and touching realization […] with just the right mix of hard honesty and tender hope»:

«Moonlight» shows three chapters in the life of an African American. Chiron ( Alex R. Hibbert ) was called Little as a child because of his slight stature, grew up with his mother (Naomie Harris), a crack-addicted mother ( Naomie Harris ), and found a father figure in drug dealer Juan (awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali ). .
As a teenager ( Ashton Sanders ), Chiron has his first homosexual experiences with his classmate Kevin ( Jharrel Jerome ). But as a young adult ( Trevante Rhodes ) he calls himself Black, suppresses his feelings and has finally become a muscle-bound drug dealer himself. But then Kevin ( André Holland ) gets in touch with him again and the hard shell begins to crumble…
