When Germany takes on its own past on the big screen, viewers can often expect a relatively staid, academic history lesson. However, “ The Baader Meinhof Complex ”, which will be broadcast on Tele 5 today, March 17 (from 8:15 p.m.), is very different in this respect. Director Uli Edel («Christiane F.», «The Palace») has once again proven with his RAF chronicle that he is a real hit guarantor.
While the film divided international criticism, a total of 2.4 million viewers streamed into German cinemas. In addition, «The Baader Meinhof Complex» was even sent into the Oscar race for Germany in 2009, but then lost out to the Japanese contribution «Nokan — The Art of the End».

That’s what «The Baader Meinhof Complex» is about
Early 1970s: The United States is waging war in Vietnam, the Middle East and the Third World, and is supported by the German judiciary, politicians and industry. This not only goes against the grain of Andreas Baader ( Moritz Bleibtreu ), Ulrike Meinhoff ( Martina Gedeck ) and Gudrun Ensslin ( Johanna Wokalek ), but is also understood by many people as solidarity with fascism.
It is the hour of birth of the militant counter-movement Red Army Faction, which openly declares war on the federal government. Soon there will be a series of terrorist attacks, kidnappings and murders. But while the authorities are on the heels of the ringleaders, their rebellion seems unstoppable — until the wave of terror finally reaches its tragic climax with the German Autumn of 1977.
