The Frenchman Eugéne Francois Vidocq was not only a nationally known criminal, but also became famous as a criminalist during the course of Napoleonic rule and opened his own private detective agency in 1833. Vidocq, who inspired contemporary writers such as Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo, is now credited with both inventing undercover investigation and pioneering modern ballistics testing.
