Kabel Eins «only» shows the short version that was released in German cinemas at the time, but opinions differ as to which of the two versions is better. Some think that the US version gives the main character more depth with its additional exposition, while others think that the European version is more successful because it is reduced to the essentials.
That’s what «The Shining» is about
Writer Jack Torrance ( Jack Nicholson ) takes a part-time job as property manager at a hotel in the Colorado mountains that is closed for the winter months. Although he is advised that the loneliness in the mountains can affect the psyche and the previous employee murdered himself and his family while working. But Jack doesn’t take the warning seriously. He looks forward to writing his manuscript in seclusion.
So he moves into the hotel for six cold months, along with his wife Wendy ( Shelley Duvall ) and their young son Danny ( Danny Lloyd ), who has a psychic ability called the Shining. He perceives disturbing visions in the hotel, while father Jack seems to fall more and more into the madness that caused a bloodbath in his predecessor.
