» The Kidnapping of the Subway Pelham 1 2 3 » is often referred to as one of Tony Scott ‘s weaker films . I can not agree with that. It’s way better than his really weakest movies anyway (that’s Beverly Hills Cop II and Top Gun , of course ). It’s not quite as outstanding as its absolute highlights (including » Unstoppable «, » Public Enemy No. 1 «, » The Last Boy Scout » or » True Romance»), but still a thrilling and always worth seeing thriller. This is not only due to Scott’s once again idiosyncratic and exquisite staging and a new approach to some of his recurring themes, but also to the great duel of the actors: Denzel Washington vs. John Travolta.
I would therefore like to recommend the broadcast on NITRO to you today. But NITRO is showing «The Kidnapping of the Pelham 1 2 3 Underground» on April 12th at 8:15 p.m. — and that means: Only the shortened FSK-12 version will be shown and that makes a huge difference here. Not just four minutes are missing, the whole merciless brutality of Travolta’s train kidnapper disappears, several intensive dialogues between him and Washington’s reluctant hero are missing.
So I won’t recommend the broadcast itself to you, but the film anyway. You can watch The Taking of the Tube Pelham 1 2 3 on Amazon Prime Video right now with the STARZPLAY Channel subscription! There is the uncut FSK-16 version:

And as I said, it’s worth it, because the only remake in Tony Scott’s career is absolutely worth seeing.

As in Joseph Sargent’s original thriller Stop the 123 Subway’s Death Ride , Scott’s remake involves a New York City subway train being hijacked. Gangster Ryder ( John Travolta ) and his heavily armed gang take Zug Pelham 1 2 3 and numerous hostages under his control. He wants several million dollars within 60 minutes, otherwise the people on the train will gradually die. His radio message happens to end up with dispatcher Walter Garber ( Denzel Washington ), who soon finds himself forced to conduct the negotiations. Because Ryder makes it clear with relentless brutality that he will not accept any other interlocutor.
