The «Harry Potter» franchise has so far reliably made a lot of money in the US box office — since » Fantastic Beasts 2 » there has been a downward trend, which part 3 could now continue. The prognosis for the launch of » Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets » is poor. One might think that the many fans of the wizarding universe would be greedy for supplies after the long wait for the latest film — but the experts of our US sister site Boxoffice Pro dampen expectations.
In Germany, «Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets» will start on April 7, 2022. The US will be there a week later, when the film will be in cinemas on April 15 — and Boxoffice Pro is forecasting earnings between 40 and 55 for the first three days million dollars. That would be the weakest US start of a film in the «Harry Potter» franchise ever and would be even below that of «Fantastic Beasts 2», which at 62 million is considered the worst to date.
Poor start, poor overall result
But not only the first weekend should be weak, the overall forecast is not exactly rosy either. Here, revenues of between 100 and 140 million dollars are predicted for the USA. The direct predecessor had brought it to 159 million in the USA, then 654 million worldwide — both the weakest values of the franchise so far.
Even though many «Harry Potter» fans are likely to be looking forward to a return to the wizarding world and, above all, are curious about the recasting of Gellert Grindelwald, who is now played by Mads Mikkelsen instead of Johnny Depp , there are doubts that too large an audience will flock to the film.
This could also have something to do with the corona pandemic, which is still preventing people from going to the cinema. Lots of competition in the cinema
