Minecraft has sold a total of around 238 million copies across all possible platforms, making it one of the most successful video games of all time. It goes without saying that Hollywood also senses a lucrative business with such a success and Warner Bros. already secured the rights to the gaming hit in 2014. But the film adaptation just didn’t quite seem to get off the ground — until now: Jason Momoa will star in the live-action «Minecraft» movie, reports The Hollywood Reporter .
Momoa’s acting breakthrough came with the role of Khal Drogo in the first season of Game Of Thrones. He was then cast as Aquaman in the DCEU and got a major supporting role in the sci-fi masterpiece Dune. In «Fast & Furious 10» he will soon be celebrating his debut in the action blockbuster series around Vin Diesel. With «Minecraft» he has now fished the next mega project.

This is Minecraft
Put very simply, one could say: “Minecraft” is LEGO as a video game. Because here, too, the players can let off steam creatively with building blocks and create their own worlds. But “Minecraft” is also so much more. In contrast to LEGO, new components are not available in the toy shop, but by exploring the virtual world, which is teeming with monsters and which can be reshaped at will. All of this is possible thanks to a reduced pixel look that takes some getting used to at first glance, but has never harmed the game’s success.

However, the iconic «Minecraft» look seems to pose a problem for the film adaptation, which is why a live-action film was chosen. Video game company Mojang has emphasized in the past that «the movie MUST be different from the game (otherwise you’d have an infinite movie at very low resolution).» So Jason Momoa will likely be walking around in his usual body and not as a block figure , although we can well imagine that the film will include at least a short video game-style sequence.

Three years ago, Variety also reported on the plot of the film , which is said to revolve around a teenage girl who, along with her friends, has to face the so-called ender dragon (the final boss of the video game). However, these plans may have changed in the meantime. In any case, the message from the Hollywood Reporter does not contain any information about the script.
The casting of Jason Momoa as the main actor seems to indicate that the plot has been revised again. It is not yet clear when Minecraft will appear.
