Some films are so ubiquitous you can’t believe they ever had a hard time. “ Fight Club ” is one of those, because David Fincher’s influential cult film crashed in the USA in 1999 after a reasonable opening weekend — so much so that a few months later the studio boss was blamed for the flop and had to resign.
But the sobering overall cinema performance and the initially divided audience reactions are now forgotten. Today «Fight Club» is considered an extremely entertaining, stylish and brutal stroke of genius — and should be at least as relevant now as it was in the late 1990s . The fact that this nasty, tough film of all things has found a streaming home on Disney+ should either disturb or deeply amuse the main character of «Fight Club» depending on how they are on the day…
«Fight Club» is currently still running on Netflix , but it’s only a matter of time before it disappears there. Because after Disney took over 20th Century Fox , Fox productions like “Fight Club” will sooner or later only be available for streaming exclusively on Disney+.
