“ Shorta – The Law of the Road ” ran under the radar in this country. Although the cop thriller ran at the Venice Film Festival, was nominated for numerous awards in its native Denmark and received very good reviews overall, it was only released for home cinema in Germany on May 20, 2021. The action film was even one of three films considered as Danish Oscar nominees that year. But “Shorta” lost out to the alcoholic tragic comedy “ Der Rausch ”. For those who like hard-hitting, realistic cop thrillers, the following information should be of interest.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes , a whopping 83 percent of reviews for “Shorta” are positive. Among other things, the “smart screenplay”, the “driving action” and the “relentless tension” are praised, even if the lack of character development reduces the overall impression a bit. At the Robert, the Danish equivalent of the Oscars, “Shorta” was nominated in eleven categories and won two of the awards (for Sound and for Özlem Sağlanmak for Best Supporting Actress).

When the teenager Talib Ben Hassi ( Jack Pedersen ) dies after being arrested for unknown reasons, the Svålegarden ghetto near Copenhagen is in a state of emergency. The full anger of the local, poor young people is released and the two police officers Jens ( Simon Sears ) and Mike ( Jacob Lohmann ), who are patrolling the area, soon find themselves surrounded by criminal gangs in a life-threatening situation.
When they arrest the young rioter Amos ( Tarek Zayat ), Jens wants to gain his trust. But the xenophobic Mike prefers to use violence, so that a conflict also arises between the two officers, while the situation around them increasingly escalates.
