No other new «Star Wars» project since the movie » The Force Awakens » has triggered such enthusiasm among viewers as the Disney+ series » The Mandalorian » and the anticipation for Season 3 is correspondingly high. The new episodes have already been released wacky. So what is Disney waiting for here?
The employees of the «Star Wars» forge Lucasfilm are currently busy with the post-production of the third season «The Mandalorian» and this work step is very time-consuming in view of the many digital effects. After months of filming, it may be another nine months before the finished series can be streamed on Disney+ , as is the case with the highly anticipated series «Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi» with Ewan McGregor. The main shooting of the third season «The Mandalorian» was completed in March 2022 — and yet actor Giancarlo Esposito has now promised a start for this summer.
«Mandalorian» season 3 already this summer? Unlikely!
Speaking to The Rich Eisen Show , Imperial Warlord actor Moff Gideon said, «You’re going to get [Season 3] soon. I still have a few things to finish, but I think it will be sometime this summer. There is no date yet, but it will be coming soon.”
With this statement, which was picked up in some media, Giancarlo Esposito fueled great expectations. But the actor, who according to his statement is not so sure anyway («but I think»), is probably making a mistake. As already described, a start this summer is unlikely, considering the lengthy post-production. In addition, the summer of 2022 is already occupied by (at least) two other «Star Wars» series.
First up are «Obi-Wan» and «Andor»
Similar to Marvel, Lucasfilm’s production machine runs non-stop. Following The Book Of Boba Fett , Ewan McGregor’s eagerly awaited return in Obi-Wan Kenobi is scheduled for May 27 and the six episodes will air through the end of June. » Andor » is expected to start in August via the «Rogue One» rebel Cassian (Diego Luna) and it seems very unlikely that the third season «The Mandalorian» will be squeezed in between.
The second season of the animated series » The Bad Batch » is also scheduled for release in 2022 and the release of a new «Star Wars» series also has to take into account what Marvel is doing. New series are also being released there continuously, in the summer it’s » Ms. Marvel » in June and then » She-Hulk » with «Orphan Black» star Tatiana Maslany.
«Mandalorian» Season 3 at the end of the year
Also given the previous release dates of «The Mandalorian» it seems more realistic that Season 3 will be released at the end of the year. Season 1 premiered (in the US) in November 2019, Season 2 in October 2020. In December 2021 «The Book of Boba Fett» (also known in fan circles as «Mando 2.5») took over. We expect the third season of «The Mandalorian» to be in autumn or winter 2022.
