In the late 1980s, James O’Barr released the indie comic Crow, about a man killed and revived by a crow who seeks revenge for the murder of himself and his fiancé. The 1994 film » The Crow «, in which lead actor Brandon Lee died in a gun accident during filming, became a hit, spawned sequels — and is now set to return to the big screen.
Bill Skarsgard and Rupert Sanders are trying
As the industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter reported exclusively, the team that will start filming in Prague and Munich from June 2022 has been set: Bill Skarsgard , known as the horror clown Pennywise from the new » ES » films, is said to be the avenger Eric Draven, written by Zach Baylin (who received an Oscar nomination for King Richard) and directed by Rupert Sanders , the director of Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost In The Shell , the Hollywood adaptation of the popular sci-fi manga.
At this point, some of the readers are likely to howl internally, since Sander’s «Ghost In The Shell» film is not particularly popular, also because the gloomy material was treated here in a comparatively smooth, Hollywood-typical way. The rather low $50 million budget of «The Crow» speaks for an implementation that could definitely do justice to the rough comic template.
A production history full of hurdles
The new «The Crow» movie was announced in 2008 (its production history even beats that of » Avatar 2 » in terms of length). It was a very different time for Hollywood, without streaming and without the dominance that the superhero genre has at the box office today. In the meantime, many sequels and reboots could have appeared, but instead no new «The Crow» film was released because those involved left and the production company Relativity Media went bankrupt in 2015.
Most recently, director Corin Hardy («The Nun») and «Aquaman» star Jason Momoa were set for «The Crow», but rose in 2018 after quarrels between the then, now deceased rights holder Samuel Hadida and the — now no longer involved — film distributor Sony out. Samuel’s brother Victor Hadida is now involved as a producer on The Crow and soon we’ll know if it’ll actually work out this time or if we’ll fill our archives with more Trouble with The Crow news.
