Horror film series are traditionally long-lived — and they are doomed to rot away in quality as soon as the numerous corpses that are produced along the way. The «Scream» franchise is an exception: horror pope Wes Craven successfully positioned the slasher series with » Scream 4 » (2011) in the then just beginning social media age and his director successors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett accurately dealt with toxic fan culture in “ Scream 5 ” (2022). The late sequels were also liked regardless of their thematic focus and we are therefore optimistic for «Scream 6», which is scheduled to start in US cinemas on March 31, 2023 (the German start is then probably on March 30).

A great idea for «Scream 6» already exists
“ Scream 6 ” isn’t a guaranteed hit . We wouldn’t be surprised if a new trilogy is being worked on in the background with Scream 7 as the finale, and recently Halloween Kills showed that bridge films can feel stretched. But it is reassuring:
Returning directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett said ahead of the Scream 6 release date announcement that screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have a «really great idea of where this saga is going.» after the cinema success of «Scream 5» quickly started to tell a story out of your fingers, rather «Scream 5» was constructed as the beginning of something new…
… and such a plan is a major difference to some other horror franchises, where sequels sometimes give the impression that the plots were cobbled together half asleep early in the morning before the start of the first day of shooting (which is probably not too far from reality ).
