While a lot of cult film series have been lovingly revised and shone in new 4K splendor — from «Star Wars» and «Indiana Jones» to «The Godfather» and «Jurassic Park» to «The Lord of the Rings» — now finally follows also one of the most popular franchises after the turn of the millennium: » Pirates of the Caribbean «.
Disney will release the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on 4K Blu-ray for the first time ever on June 2, 2022. One of the most expensive, largest and most visually stunning film series of all time is finally available in Ultra HD — including revised image and sound quality. In addition to «Pirates of the Caribbean», which by the way has a place in our list of the best adventure films of all time, Amazon also lists » Pirates Of The Caribbean — Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 » (2006), » Pirates Of The Caribbean — At The End Of The World » (2007) and » Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides » (2011) in 4K. The fifth and so far last part » Pirates Of The Caribbean 5: Salazar’s Revenge «.», which was released in the USA at the start of home cinema on Ultra-HD, is currently still missing, but it may also follow soon. To date, there is no information about a complete box in which all (previous) «Pirates of the Caribbean» adventures are housed in 4K. Although it probably wouldn’t be complete for very long anyway, since Disney still has a continuation of the blockbuster series on its agenda.
«Pirates of the Caribbean»: What’s next for the blockbuster cult?
With worldwide box office earnings of over 4.5 billion dollars, the «Pirates of the Caribbean» saga is not only one of the most successful film series of all time, but also one of the hobbyhorses in Disney’s film catalogue. Or at least that’s how it used to be. Five years after the last part, the mouse house is still sticking to the pirate adventure, but things have been better for a sequel — especially for fans of Johnny Depp . In all probability, he and his ex-wife Amber Heard will not return as Jack Sparrow after the War of the Roses.
The best adventure films of all time
Disney is currently working on two new Pirates of the Caribbean projects, both without Johnny Depp. On the one hand, there is “ Pirates of the Caribbean 6 ”, which screenwriter Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) is supposed to get off the ground with Ted Elliot, who is already involved in part 1. This film could be a sort of soft reboot , with old characters returning (just not Jack Sparrow) and possibly passing the baton to a new generation of seafarers. «Salazar’s Revenger» maker Joachim Rønning is under discussion as a director.
The second project is a spin-off from the main series, Pirates of the Caribbean, starring Margot Robbie as a chief pirate. Christina Hodson, who also wrote Birds Of Prey (also starring Margot Robbie), is set to write the story.
In both cases, however, it remains to be seen whether implementation will ultimately take place. On the one hand, a continuation without audience favorite Johnny Depp is quite a big risk, on the other hand, some of those involved (Robbie) have such a busy schedule that it is questionable when the shooting could even be tackled.
For the time being, fans will have to be content with the previous five «Pirates of the Caribbean» films — for example on Disney + , on DVD or Blu-ray or soon for the very first time in 4K.
