While Fede Alvarez ‘s Evil Dead may not have been a hit with all horror enthusiasts, the remake of the 1980s classic Tanz der Teufel certainly can’t be faulted for one thing: anemia. Without a doubt, the shocker, which is even indexed in Germany in the unabridged version, is one of the bloodiest cinema films of the past ten years. Here, the red lifeblood not only squirts out of the maltreated bodies like fountains, but at some point also pours from the sky in torrents. Total mess.

For Sam Raimi , the director of the original “The Evil Dead” (aka “Dance of the Devil”) and the “Spider-Man” trilogy with Tobey Maguire, that was at some point too much of a good thing: Because Fede Alvarez had prepared a screenplay version, with an even more brutal ending. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting , the filmmaker explained the scene, which was never filmed, as follows:
“It was like Mia levitates for the first time […] Suddenly her body goes tense like an exorcism – and then we wanted to tear her limbs apart. It would have exploded like a blood bomb. “
But nothing came of it because Evil Dead producer Sam Raimi suggested to Fede Alvarez that Mia ( Jane Levy ) should survive after everything she’s been through in the film. Alvarez recently announced this via Twitter and also, for the first time, attached to us the filmed part of the alternative ending of his remake, which is based 1:1 on that of the original:
A new “Evil Dead” is already waiting
After a long rumor that Fede Alvarez will direct Evil Dead 2, we now know that nothing will come of it. But the franchise is far from written off. Because with ” Evil Dead Rise ” the next part is already in the can and a first trailer shouldn’t be long in coming. In the US, this will appear exclusively on HBO Max, while the horror film will most likely hit theaters in Germany.
Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland will star and will be directed and written by Lee Cronin (“The Hole In The Ground”). Produced by Fede Alvarez, Sam Raimi and original lead actor Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead Rise also breaks with an old “Dance of the Devils” tradition and will not be set in a cabin in the woods, but will instead be set in a high-rise building. It is not yet clear when the film will be released.
FSK 18 highlight: One of the best horror films of the year is released for home cinema only 3 (!) weeks after the cinema release
