When Apple recently announced that it would be shooting a MonsterVerse series about Godzilla and the Titans for the AppleTV+ streaming service , not all fans were thrilled. Because many feared that the franchise would have done with it in the cinema and that it would only continue on the small screen. But Legendary, the company behind “ Godzilla vs. Kong ” and Co., is probably on two tracks.
Because even if there is still no announcement of a new movie from the official studio side, we have received optimistic news from Australian government authorities: They have now announced that a sequel to » Godzilla vs. Kong » will be shot in the state of Queensland this year . Local film funding in the millions has now been approved for this and it is expected that around 500 people from the region will be employed in the crew for the film project.
«Godzilla vs. Kong 2» — maybe without Godzilla?
Even if the project is currently being referred to in the media as » Godzilla vs. Kong 2 » because it is the direct successor to the latest part of the Monsterverse, which is called «Godzilla vs. Kong», it may not be the next one clash of the two giants. The latest untitled film in the franchise, which also includes Godzilla , Kong: Skull Island , and Godzilla 2 , may just focus on Kong — making it a good addition to the streaming series that focuses on Godzilla and Godzilla Focused Titans around him.
Director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Max Borenstein teased such a sequel at the end of their film. As is well known, Kong moves into his new kingdom under the earth at the end of «Godzilla vs. Kong» — and this is exactly where the sequel is supposed to play.
«Son Of Kong» as a sequel?
Wingard hasn’t been confirmed as a director yet (after all, there’s no announcement yet), but the rumor mill has been circulating for a long time that he should continue. And he’s said to have a movie in mind called Son Of Kong — a nod to the 1933 sequel to the very first King Kong movie. Does that mean the giant ape is going to be a daddy? In » King Kong’s Son » from 1933, the title is primarily used to have a giant ape in the center (his son) after the death of King Kong in the predecessor, but it seems certain that Kong will now have to defend his new home.
After all, he’s already fighting a dinosaur creature upon his arrival in «Godzilla vs. Kong» and Wingard already teased that this creature wasn’t just designed for a short scene. So there should be more of these dinosaurs in the interior of the earth — and they may not be happy that Kong is spreading here.

There could also be other titans slumbering beneath the surface of the earth, possibly contesting Kong’s new title as King Kong. Finally, this setting allows those responsible to easily introduce more titans without having to explain where they have been all along. Author Max Borenstein has already revealed that for him the question does not even arise as to whether titans slumber inside the earth. That is a matter of course!
