After Avengers: Endgame , Spider-Man: No Way Home and the series Loki and What If…? ‘ the multiverse is finally here in the MCU. ” Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ” goes deep into the different versions of the universe with various variants of a character – and not only from Doctor Strange ( Benedict Cumberbatch ) himself.
In an interview with Fandango , director Sam Raimi revealed that we’re also seeing different versions of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. We’ve suspected that for a while, but now it’s been officially confirmed. In the new trailer , we’re likely to see one of those variants. After about 40 seconds we can see a very zombie-like Wanda:
Marvel Studios Is that a zombie variant of Wanda in the new trailer?
Doctor Strange and Wanda are probably not the only characters getting multiple variants. A recently released keychain set not only shows us three variants of the title hero (the well-known “normal” Strange as well as a “Defender Strange” and a “Supreme Strange”), but also two versions of his sidekick Wong ( Benedict Wong ) .
The fact that Wong also has a “Defender” variant leads to the obvious conclusion that we also get at least two different versions of him.
The new trailer also offers a few other interesting scenes. We see that a variant of “Doctor Strange” has a 3rd (!) eye. And we see two old friends: Wanda is reunited with her children, Billy ( Julian Hilliard ) and Tommy ( Jett Klyne ).
Marvel Studios This Doctor Strange (the Supreme Strange?) has a 3rd eye.
Incidentally, when Doctor Strange, Wanda and Wong face the madness of the multiverse, they are joined by a new heroine: fighting alongside them is America Chavez ( Xochitl Gomez ). Sam Raimi revealed in the Fandango interview that Chavez comes from another universe and is therefore quite new to our world – and initially has very little respect for Doctor Strange.
So while there’s a hell of a lot to be said for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, it’s surprisingly short for an MCU blockbuster. The running time that has now been announced as part of the start of advance ticket sales is “only” 2 hours and 6 minutes. This makes Doctor Strange, for example, over 20 minutes shorter than Spider-Man: No Way Home. It is the shortest MCU film since Captain Marvel , which is 2 hours and 3 minutes long.
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness hits theaters on May 4, 2022. Advance ticket sales are already underway.
