After a few years of silence around Maren Ade , the filmmaker returned impressively in 2016 with » Toni Erdmann » and was highly praised for her extraordinary father-daughter dramedy. In addition to an Oscar nomination for Best International Film, there was also the Critics’ Prize in Cannes. In addition, the tragic comedy not only received the full 5 stars in the official FILMSTARTS review, but was also named the best film of 2016 .
That sounds exaggerated, especially for a German film? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Despite its unusually opulent running time of just over 160 minutes, «Toni Erdmann» is a gripping, deeply touching, precisely observed and excellently acted visual experience by Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek in the leading roles that you should not miss. You can now watch the masterpiece with a Netflix subscription .

That’s what Toni Erdmann is all about
Winfried ( Peter Simonischek ) is a 65-year-old, sensitive music teacher with a strong tendency to joke. His daughter Ines ( Sandra Hüller ), on the other hand, is the complete opposite: As an ambitious management consultant, she travels the world and dives from project to project in order to climb the career ladder. Father and daughter therefore rarely see each other, but that changes abruptly when Winfried’s dog dies.
He then decides to visit Ines unannounced at work in Bucharest. Because of his jokes and the subliminal criticism of their lifestyle, things soon break out between the two. And then Winfried also turns into his alter ego Toni Erdmann: the protruding teeth are crooked, the suit doesn’t fit well and he’s obviously wearing a wig. The weird bird claims to be a personal coach and embarrasses Ines in front of her colleagues — but the disguise also ensures that father and daughter get closer again…
