In the 2000s, director Clint Eastwood ventured into an extraordinary project: two war films about the battle for the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, in which 20,800 Japanese and around 7,000 American soldiers lost their lives. The events are described from an American perspective (“ Flags Of Our Fathers ”) and from a Japanese perspective (“ Letters From Iwo Jima ”) – and both films are now available as a subscription to Amazon Prime Video :

However, not only the perspective is different, but also the quality of the films: both are definitely recommendable, especially if you watch them one after the other in order to experience the complete cinematic package, but “Letters From Iwo Jima” is undoubtedly the more successful work.
While “Flags Of Our Fathers” is impressively staged and filmed, Eastwood gets caught up in the dramaturgy and the somewhat unclear message: “On the one hand, Eastwood renounces and denounces the pathos of war, on the other hand he celebrates it camaraderie in battle and then unintentionally ends up back in patriotic hero worship,” says our review (3 out of 5 stars):

This is different with “Letters From Iwo Jima” (4.5 out of 5 stars), in which “the artistic concept and its emotional dimension go together one hundred percent”, as the other review says. “Even though, or maybe even because the end is known, the film remains exciting and highly dramatic throughout its 142 minutes. You get to know the characters better and better and take an interest in their hopeless fate.”

The Plot of “Flags Of Our Fathers” & “Letters From Iwo Jima”
On February 19, 1945, the Americans landed on Iwo Jima after three days of shelling the island from the sea. But the supposedly easy conquest turns out to be extremely costly. Eventually, the Americans conquer the island, resulting in one of the most famous photos in history (see cover photo above and trailer thumbnail below). Three soldiers who were there are now supposed to collect money for the war back home with their supposed heroic story…
