When shortly before Christmas 2019 ” Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker“ was released in cinemas worldwide, there was really only one topic for film fans around the world: the final showdown in the galaxy far, far away. In the end, the finale of the Skywalker saga grossed over a billion dollars – impressive, but certainly less than you would expect from Disney. It doesn’t matter, “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.79 billion), “The Lion King” ($1.65 billion) and “Frozen 2” ($1.45 billion) ended up in the top 3 anyway the most successful films of the year. The fact that “Star Wars” ranked relatively far behind in 7th place was probably also due to a weak entry in China – where a local production outperformed the Hollywood blockbuster: “Ip Man 4: The Finale”.
While “Star Wars 9” only grossed $12.1 million there in its launch week, martial arts ace Donnie Yen ‘s fourth and final appearance as Bruce Lee’s legendary teacher brought in an impressive $43 million. With a little delay, the martial arts spectacle even found its way into German cinemas and ended up grossing a whopping 239 million dollars – despite calls for a boycott in the wake of the protests in Hong Kong at the time. “Ip Man 4” is now available for everyone with a subscription to Amazon Prime Video at no additional cost …
