David Cronenberg has directed numerous classics and masterpieces. Above all, the cult director shaped body horror behind works such as » Videodrome «, » Die Fliege » (see our article picture) and » A History Of Violence «. There hasn’t been a new Cronenberg film since 2014’s Maps To The Stars . But that will soon change. » Crimes Of The Future » has been wrapped and is rumored to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022. But already «Crimes Of The Future», in which Cronenberg will return to his body horror roots, is causing a stir.
According to World Of Reel , the film has already been shown to festival officials and caused a stir. According to a source for the magazine , Crimes Of The Future will cause «a lot more chaos and controversy» than Crash did back then . The erotic drama also celebrated its world premiere in Cannes in 1996 – accompanied by numerous boos and subsequent discussions.
In some cases, there were calls to ban it and cinemas refused to even show “Crash” in their homes. Many found the depiction of sex and violence disturbing in the story of a couple who find new pleasure in the pain and destruction after a car crash.
The FILMSTARTS review of David Cronenberg’s «Crash»
If «Crimes Of The Future» should once again «significantly» (!) surpass these reactions, that’s quite a statement. But the source goes even further: the last 20 minutes in particular are a challenge. The person quoted expects that people will leave the theater at the Cannes premiere, faint and have real panic attacks.
This is not an exaggeration, the source has explicitly promised to World Of Reel .
This is Crimes Of The Future
David Cronenberg’s new sci-fi horror thriller is set in the near future where humanity has the ability to shape their bodies with technology. Not everyone welcomes this with open arms, some try to regulate how the resulting opportunities are dealt with.
Performance artist Saul Tenser ( Viggo Mortensen ) and his assistant Caprice ( Léa Seydoux ) have turned the process of growing and removing new organs with unexpected side effects into a show. On stage he turns such operations into a spectacle. But the show has to keep filming and getting bigger and bigger…
Incidentally, the role of «James Bond: No Time To Die» star Léa Seydoux is particularly emphasized in the voice quoted above and described as «bonkers» (ie completely crazy). Her character is compared to performance artist Gina Pane, who made headlines by injuring herself on stage with thorns or razor blades. «Seydoux plays sort of a (very often nude) Gina Pane-esque artist in the near future,» according to a quote from World Of Reel.
The cast of «Crimes Of The Future» also includes Kristen Stewart , Scott Speedman and Welket Bungué , known from «Berlin Alexanderplatz» . It is not yet known when «Crimes Of The Future» will be released regularly in cinemas following a festival evaluation.
