For twelve years now, fans of Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes 2: The Shadow Game have been waiting for Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to finally reprise their roles in Sherlock Holmes 3 as the legendary detective duo Sherlock and Dr. to see Watson. After things were not so bad for part 3 in 2020 and a suitable Guy Ritchie replacement was found in director Dexter Fletcher , who finally wanted to implement the project, the production was initially thwarted due to the corona pandemic .

Since then, there have been no updates on how Sherlock Holmes 3 is actually doing. Until now, sort of. It has now been announced that HBO Max is in early development for two spin-off series set in the Sherlock Holmes universe. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will most likely not be in front of the camera here. Downey Jr. is involved in both formats as an executive producer.
What do the two series mean for «Sherlock Holmes 3»?
What is interesting about the two series is that they each focus on a new character that is or should be introduced in «Sherlock Holmes 3». So it could be that the previously untitled series will ensure that the production of «Sherlock 3» gets wind again and the implementation is back on track. On the other hand, it could now also be the case that the two HBO Max projects now represent a kind of replacement for «Sherlock Holmes 3». But we assume that new characters will really be introduced in the main franchise before devoting an entire series to them. Therefore, there are many indications that “Sherlock Holmes 3” is coming – and as is well known, hope dies last anyway.
HBO Max is currently hard at work building on the most successful Warner franchises. While an «IT» prequel series called » Welcome To Derry » has already been confirmed and Colin Farrell is slipping back into the role of the penguin from » The Batman «, the two «Sherlock» series are now continuing this trend. Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes 2 also proved to be smash hits for Warner Bros. with a combined box office of over $1 billion.
