Alex Lewis ( Liam Neeson ) was one of the best hit men for decades. He did his jobs with stone-cold precision and without leaving a trace. But that has changed. Alex is old, he has problems with his memory, which is why there is now even circumstantial evidence that helps FBI agent Vincent Serra ( Guy Pearce ) to connect his recent murders and thus to get to the bottom of it. And then Alex is supposed to kill a girl, which goes against his principles.
He refuses, wanting to protect the girl instead, so he has to hunt down the people who originally hired him. A race against time begins. Can Alex take out his former bosses before Vincent catches him or his memory fails him for good?
