The first Streets Of Rage game was released in 1991 and was a hit in teenage bedrooms equipped with a console called the Sega Mega Drive. You chose one of three ex-cops with the evocative names of Axel Stone, Adam Hunter or Blaze Fielding and then banged your way through hordes of criminals from left to right across the tube TV. Derek Kolstad , the author of the first three «John Wick» films, has written a screenplay for the side-scroll game «Streets Of Rage» — and among others the Sonic film studio dj2 Entertainment is already on board.
As the industry magazine Deadline exclusively reported, Derek Kolstad wrote a so-called spec script for «Streets Of Rage». So the story of the film came about on his initiative and at his own risk, rather than being hired by a studio to do it. For the time being, it remains Derek Kolstad’s secret as to what story he carved out of the thin plots of the games. But with “ John Wick ” in particular he proved that simple premises can result in excellent action films (whereby the directors also play an important role, with “John Wick” it was Chad Stahelski and David Leitch).
«Sonic» opened the door
Unfortunately, video game adaptations often have a bad reputation, and that reputation is well deserved. But they can also be very successful: Among the top 5 of the world’s most successful films of 2022 are two game adaptations, » Uncharted » and » Sonic the Hedgehog 2 » (they are both among the better representatives of their guild). Video game adaptations are in trend and the success of the «Sonic» films should have encouraged Sega to bring «Streets Of Rage» to the cinemas.
It is doubtful whether the fan community around the iconic video games alone is large enough to make the film a success. But if the «John Wick» writer gets his hands dirty, there’s a good chance the result will be a witty action film that might appeal to viewers who enjoy polished big-screen brawls without knowing the games.
