Ten years after his last crusade, Indiana Jones had disappeared from the cinema screens when Brendan Fraser’s adventurer Rick O’Connell did not succeed the legendary archaeologist in a fully worthy manner in 1999, but the blockbuster » The Mummy » has definitely become a humorous adventure film. The formula of pseudo-historical nonsense, breathless treasure hunts and surprisingly grotesque peaks of violence may not work as well here as in the best «Indiana Jones» films, but if you were a teenager in 1999 you didn’t have a new Indy film to watch and just got up down to the grave with the CGI mummy instead.

Indy replacement for mummy fans and millennials
The Mummy got two sequels before a new Mummy movie starring Tom Cruise was unleashed in 2017 but largely ignored by audiences. Today, only the 1999 film is really loved. On YouTube, the clips from «The Mummy» attract many comments from people who remember how they saw and fell in love with the summer blockbuster of the time when they were young.

This very loose remake of the 1932 Boris Karloff horror classic didn’t fare well with critics, but it’s undoubtedly a special film: just before » X-Men » and » Spider-Man » ushered in superhero film dominance, lived here once again successfully revived the adventure cinema of the 80s — albeit with computer effects that were real eye-catchers at the time (and have unfortunately aged as badly today as a non-mummified corpse).
The story of «The Mummy»
That probably would have happened to the clumsy Indiana Jones too: During excavations in Egypt, the American archaeologist Richard «Rick» O’Connell ( Brendan Fraser ) accidentally wakes up a high priest who was cursed in antiquity, who first walks through the area as a decomposed corpse and later sucking out several people looks like it did before. Rick, his colleague Evelyn ( Rachel Weisz ) and her brother Jonathan ( John Hannah ) now try to put the angry and deadly mummy back in the grave.
