Director Riley Stearns is obviously fascinated by the subject of self-defense: in the tragic comedy “ The Art Of Self-Defense ”, a man named Casey (Jesse Eisenberg) learns after an attack how he can defend himself using the power of his body and certain techniques. Sarah, played by Karen Gillan from the new Netflix comedy The Bubble, has to defend herself in Stearn’s new film Dual. Whereby Sarah competes against herself!
The premise of ” Dual “: Sarah, suffering from a terminal illness, lets herself be cloned, only to find out that she is not going to die after all and must now fight her clone in a fight to the death. Riley Stearn seems to have taken not only the rough topic, but also the tone of voice from “The Art Of Self-Defense” into his black humorous sci-fi thriller. The characters treat each other deadly serious and laconic, while the whole escalating situation has an absurd comedy.
“Dual” is reminiscent of the films by Yorgos Lanthimos, in which unlucky singles sometimes turn into animals, see ” The Lobster “, without the Greek director completely ridiculing the strange goings-on of his eccentric characters. “Dual” – with “Breaking Bad” fan favorite Aaron Paul in an (as it seems) important supporting role – still has no German release date.
