The upcoming Star Trek series Strange New Worlds tells the backstory of the Starship Enterprise before James T. Kirk became Captain. That’s why it’s mainly about his predecessor Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ), who commands his crew around Mr. Spock ( Ethan Peck ), Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Uhura ( Celia Rose Gooding ) in the unknown vastness of space.
Even before season 1 was even released, the series was extended for a second season and the actor was also cast for one of the most important «Star Trek» characters of all: the one best known for his long-standing leading role in the series «Vampire Diaries». Paul Wesley follows in the footsteps of William Shatner from season 2 and becomes the young James T. Kirk – and there is already a first picture:
Wesley is the third actor to portray the character. After Shatner in the original series, Chris Pine was cast in the famous role in the 2009 theatrical reboot and its sequels — though these films are set in an alternate Star Trek timeline, unlike Strange New Worlds. So, as a young Kirk, Paul Wesley will have a much more direct connection to the original Kirk.
And by the way, he has already given his successor his blessing. William Shatner tweeted : «Protect my ship and crew, Captain! Congratulations!»
Back to basics
In addition to the many recurring characters, «Star Trek: Strange New Worlds» is also more oriented towards » Starship Enterprise » in its form. Because while “ Picard ” and “ Discovery ” recently relied on longer storylines that spanned several episodes, each episode should now be dedicated to its own little adventure.
«Strange New Worlds» starts in the USA on May 5, 2022 exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service , which is also scheduled to start in Germany in the coming months. It is not yet known whether the “Star Trek” series will also appear exclusively on Paramount+ in this country. There is currently no information about the German release.
