When Netflix surprisingly and without prior notice released the horror film » Veronica » by «[REC]» director Paco Plaza worldwide in 2018 , the reports on the Internet came crashing down. Reports from the USA in particular were piling up that the film was so scary and hard that you couldn’t see it through to the end. On social media, some die-hard horror fans said they had to cancel the Netflix stream.
And also in Germany, where the film was first shown at the Fantasy Filmfest and then released on DVD and Blu-ray a year before the Netflix release in 2018, there were at least a few reports. The magazine NEON, which still existed at the time, spoke in an article of both the «worst horror film of all time» and the «scariest horror film of all time».
That’s certainly exaggerated for the well-crafted, but then quite well-known genre path trodden, supposedly based on true events story about a schoolgirl who suddenly seems to be possessed by dark forces after a failed necromancy. But there was apparently enough excitement and interest around the film that Netflix has now commissioned another part.
«Hermana Muerte» tells the story before «Veronica»
As Netflix and director Paco Plaza now announced directly from the shooting, the prequel focuses on the terrifying and blind nun (played by Consuelo Trujillo ), which Veronica and her classmates only call «Sister Death», but who then surprisingly assists the young woman helps her ghost problem. The new film is also called “ Hermana Muerte ” aka “Sister Death”. The nun was already the focus of a comic book accompanying the first film.

The prequel now takes us to post-war Spain, where the young novice Narcisa (played by Aria Bedmar ) takes up work as a teacher at a former convent that has been converted into an all-girls school. But there the mysterious events quickly accumulate. The nun, plagued by dark visions, must find out what dark secrets surround the monastery…
In addition to Aria Bedmar, Almudena Amor has the second leading role. She was last seen in Paco Plaza’s horror film » La Abuela — She is waiting for you «, which was only released in Germany a few days ago.

Other roles include Maru Valdivielso, Luisa Merelas, Chelo Vivares, Sara Roch, Olimpia Roch, Adriana Camarena, Marina Delgado, Claudia Fernandez Arroyo and Consuelo Trujillo. The screenplay is by Jorge Guerricaechevarria («An Eye for an Eye», «Sky High»).
Since filming is already underway, » Hermana Muerte » should appear on Netflix in 2022 or 2023 at the latest. “ Veronica – Playing with the Devil ” can still be streamed there.
