The 80s once proved to be particularly fertile ground for filmmakers to show the world that, contrary to popular belief, remakes can very well be better than the original. Between John Carpenter’s «The Thing from Another World» (1982) and «The Blob» (1988), cult director David Cronenberg also succeeded in doing so in 1986 : With » The Fly » he delivered gloomy sci-fi horror like «Scanners» and «Videodrome», well-known masters of body horror for many, his absolute masterpiece — which not only won an Oscar, but for us is still one of the great cult classics that every genre fan should have seen.
Tele5 is showing «Die Fliege» on March 20, 2022 from 10:15 p.m. — and normally we would also make a crystal-clear recommendation at this point. After all, the teleportation horror is not only one of the best horror films for us, but also one of the best science fiction films of all time — and is accordingly one of the few films that are represented in two FILMSTARTS all-time best lists. The problem: «The Fly» was released by the FSK from the age of 18 and can therefore only be shown in full after 11 p.m. It can therefore be assumed that Tele5 will only show the shortened version of the classic. But there are alternatives:
» «The Fly» on Disney+ *
» «The Fly» on Blu-ray* on Amazon *
» «The Fly» on Amazon Prime Video *
The film is not only available completely unabridged on Blu-ray for little money, but is now also available on Disney+ as one of many sci-fi milestones alongside “ Alien ”, “ Predator ” and “ Starship Troopers ” . The film is of course also available as video-on-demand on Amazon Prime Video and other streaming platforms.
«The Fly»: Body horror at its best
Based on the short story of the same name by George Langelaan, which was made into a film in 1958 , «The Fly» tells the story of a scientist ( Jeff Goldblum ) who developed a teleporter. With the help of a complex computer and two wired cabins, he can transport matter directly from one place to another. But soon it’s not enough for him to simply use objects for his experiments — so he first puts a monkey through his machine before finally carrying out the ultimate self-test. With devastating consequences…
