Long before the theatrical release, Matt Reeves got us in the mood for “ The Batman ” by making it clear that his film about the Dark Knight would have little in common with the currently popular comic blockbusters from Marvel and Co. and instead would have iconic action — and crime classics as a model, which many film fans consider to be general knowledge: In addition to «Seven», «Chinatown» and «Taxi Driver», Reeves himself also named » The French Connection » by William Friedkin («The Exorcist») a crucial source of inspiration.
Anyone who wants to see exactly where the DC epic, which has been in cinemas for a few weeks, has used it can make a comparison tonight: 3sat is showing “The French Connection” from 10:25 p.m. Alternatively, the film is also available simply as a subscription to Disney+ and, of course, as DVD, Blu-ray and video-on-demand:

Incidentally, we can well imagine the extent to which the 1972 crime thriller «The Batman», which won five Oscars (including for best film), influenced it: While the parallels to «Sieben» or » Chinatown » are obviously more of a content-related nature, «The French Connection» probably acted as a godfather. The classic is a single chase anyway, but the main chase in particular is still one of the best that action cinema has to offer, even after more than 50 years. No wonder it also landed in our top 5 best car chases of all time a few years ago:
