Denis Villeneuve filmed Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic “Dune” in two parts. The already released ” Dune ” will be followed by ” Dune 2 ” in October 2023 . But there are other novels by Herbert – and so the film series could also grow. After Villeneuve himself already spoke of a possible trilogy and a “Dune 3”, his screenwriter Jon Spaihts now repeats this and becomes a little more specific.

Speaking to The Playlist magazine , Spaihts revealed that there are some narrative threads in his script for Dune 2 that point to the future and suggest that they’re not done with this universe yet. “Dune 2” is a satisfying conclusion, but there are still a few clues to the events that follow.
“Dune 3” = “Dune Messiah”
As Spaihts reveals, the template for a possible “Dune 3” would not be surprisingly the second “Dune” novel “Der Herr des Wüstenplanetens” (original title: “Dune Messiah”). The action takes place several years after the events of Dune and Dune 2 (which is why the filmmakers could take their time). For Spaihts, “Dune Messiah” is a “very interesting book” because it somehow deconstructs “Dune” and shows even more the danger of following a charismatic leader.

Without wanting to reveal too much and without spoiling events from “Dune 2”, “Dune Messiah” focuses on such a leader who is convinced that he is actually doing the good and the right thing. In order to enforce this, he has been covering the entire universe with his armies for years with a war that has already cost billions of lives and will cost many more…
More plans for the “Dune” franchise
Whether Dune 3 is coming or not, there’s increasing evidence that the Dune franchise won’t end up being just two movies. Even before the start of the first film, it was announced that the streaming series “ Dune The Sisterhood ” would also be produced and would tell the story of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. However, it has recently become suspiciously quiet about the project.
Spaihts now revealed that the series is still alive, but he is not allowed to talk much about it. He can only reveal that it is being delayed a bit because work on “Dune 2” and exploring further cinematic opportunities in the “Dune” universe have been given higher priority for the time being.
