Netflix shows no mercy: Although the first season ” Archive 81 ” ends with a surprising twist and a decent cliffhanger, the horror series will not get a second season. This is reported by the US industry magazine Deadline . The reasons for the cancellation are not known , but this is not uncommon for Netflix .
The streaming service is known for its merciless cost-benefit analysis of films and series: If a series did not have enough viewers or a film did not contribute to enough new registrations or subscription renewals on Netflix, there will be no sequel. On the other hand, successful films and series are often continued or expanded into entire universes (from “The Witcher” to “Army Of The Dead”).
In the case of “Archive 81”, however, the cancellation is quite surprising: the horror series was actually quite successful on Netflix. After its release on January 14, 2022, it stayed in the Netflix top 10 in the US, Germany and other countries for a few weeks and was also watched for at least 100 million hours.
But apparently Netflix had different expectations or the cost-benefit calculation between budget and watched hours simply didn’t add up in this case, as Deadline suspected.
This is Archive 81
In “Archive 81” the archivist Dan ( Mamoudou Athie ) is commissioned by the opaque businessman Virgil Davenport ( Martin Donovan ) to restore old video recordings of the graduate student Melody ( Dina Shihabi ), which fell victim to a fire 25 years earlier. At the time, Melody was investigating a mysterious sect and was looking for her birth mother.
Dan soon becomes convinced that Melody is not dead, but that he can contact her across time and space and save her life. In the last episode of “Archive 81” the events then overturn, it goes into a parallel world and the true identity and motivation of certain characters is revealed, before there is a proper cliffhanger at the end .
