The Walt Disney Company
Leading actress Zoe Saldana is ahead of the curve for all of us: she got 20 minutes of ‘Avatar 2’ , James Cameron ‘ s highly anticipated sci-fi sequel , in which she co-stars alongside Sam Worthington. But now it should only be a few weeks before the rest of the world is given at least a small glimpse into the sci-fi worlds of ” Avatar 2 “: According to exclusive information from reporter Jeff Sneider, who is responsible for the reliable Hollywood newsletter The Kneller writes, “An ‘Avatar 2’ teaser of some sort will premiere before Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel.”So the trailer is supposed to run during screenings of the new Marvel film in the commercial block. “ Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ” starts in German cinemas on May 4, 2022.
It remains questionable whether the trailer will only be shown on screen. That would certainly be appropriate for an epic like “Avatar 2” that was shot explicitly for the cinema, but in this case Disney would guarantee that the first contact many viewers had with “Avatar 2” would be a shaky cell phone recording that someone recorded in the cinema and then uploaded it to a video platform (only genuinely with coughing on the soundtrack). It is therefore more likely that the trailer will also be officially published online, either on May 4th when “Doctor Strange 2” hits theaters or shortly thereafter.
What we know about “Avatar 2” so far: Not much
“Avatar 2” will be released in cinemas on December 14, 2022 and is the biggest mystery among the upcoming blockbusters. The official advertising campaign has so far been limited to concept images and photos from the shooting being shared on social networks. We couldn’t get a real idea of what to expect in this sci-fi film, as concept images can’t do justice to the finished cinematic scenes and there wasn’t much to see in the behind-the-scenes photos except for water pools and blue screens : A film like “Avatar 2” only finds its form through the hard work of many years by the many effects artists involved.
So the trailer is all the more important so that we can get a feeling for the magnificent, extraterrestrial places James Cameron and his team are taking us to this time. The first “Avatar” from 2009 played largely in the jungles of Pandora, in the sequel we are supposed to explore the underwater worlds together with the ex-marine Jake Sully ( Sam Worthington ) and his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Which would also summarize what we know about “Avatar 2” in terms of content: It’s about Sully, Neytiri and the adventures of their family, which also includes children.
James Cameron puts everything on one card – or rather four cards – in his “Avatar” sequel. In addition to “Avatar 2”, “ Avatar 3 ”, “ Avatar 4 ” and “ Avatar 5 ” are also being planned and some are already in the works. Setting the course for this gigantic project began long before the cinema industry was shaken by the rise of streaming services and the Corona crisis. At this point in time, nobody can say with certainty whether there will still be enough cinemas on December 20, 2028, the start date of “Avatar 5”, so that the theatrical release of such an expensive film is even worthwhile. The other question: How much desire does the audience have for new “Avatar” films? Here we will be much smarter after the release of the trailer.
