When » Cover Hard » was released on VHS in Germany in 1993, Ringo Lam ‘s action hit was quickly indexed — even though almost every outbreak of violence had already been snipped away on the German release and this release was shortened by around seven minutes. After later (sometimes uncut) DVD releases were also indexed, the list was not removed until 2018. Since then, fans have been hoping in vain for a re-release, but now the time has come.
From August 26, 2022, «Cover Hard» will be available in limited (!) Mediabooks with two different cover versions and including booklets — of course uncut! Both variants can already be pre-ordered, although unfortunately only cover variant A is known and shown at online retailers such as Amazon:

Cover Hard ( aka Full Contact) is considered by many action fans to be one of the latest pinnacles of Hong Kong’s so-called heroic bloodshed genre , perhaps the best not directed by John Woo himself.
The focus is on Chow Yun-Fat (even cooler here than usual) who, as nightclub bouncer Jeff, allows himself to be persuaded to take part in a heist. Above all, he wants to help his best friend Sam ( Anthony Wong ). But the leader of the gang Judge aka Sino ( Simon Yam ) betrays him. However, Jeff survives the attempt on his life and now has only one goal: revenge…
With the great Hong Kong stars Chow Yun-Fat, Simon Yam and Anthony Wong in the center, Ringo Lam stages the “ City On Fire ” together with the “Reservoir Dogs” role model (incidentally, first published misleadingly in Germany as “Cover Hard 2”) probably the best film of his long and dazzling career.
The filmmaker, who died at the end of 2018, impresses above all with brutal and grandiosely staged action scenes, which always alternate with melodramatic shots and cool poses — just like you would expect from a heroic bloodshed hit on the tracks of » The Killer «, » A Better Tomorrow ” and Co. expected.
A few years ago, when Time Out Magazine polled critics, genre directors, and action stars, «Cover Hard» found its way onto the resulting list of the «101 Best Action Movies Ever Made.» again.
